Success

While reading Sonia Nieto, I came upon a case study about the success of students in school. Of course, success is a very subjective view, but it made me think about myself being a successful student...and eventually a succesful educator.

At first, Nieto explained that a certain amount of students were viewed as success. She discussed the importance of graduation, high grades, enjoyment of school, future plans in education...but how can you believe that these are a standard of success for ALL students? Sometimes...I wonder about my own success. I set standards for myself...and met those goals...therefore I think my career was successful. So isn't being successful meeting your OWN goals...or someone elses? I take into an acount of a person I met in highschool. They graduated highschool...with mediocre grades to me...but for them it was a a HUGE accomplishment. Eventually...they got a sports scholarship to a two year university...the first person ever to go to college in their ENTIRE family. But...will stop after an associates...however...i think that as giving up...but they think that it is a huge accomplishment. So I rethink my own ideas...about success. This person took what they had...worked hard...and made it to graduation with decent grades and to a institution for higher learning. And I think now...I am so proud of this person...they are a success.

So...after reading this passage...I think that I need to remember that individual success cannot be compared to that of another. Diversity includes the difference in goals and expectations. Success is divined by the individual and not by a set standard.
